Our Managing Director Aki Tsuchiya visited the EBU headquarters in Switzerland this March to join industry colleagues from BBC, Cisco, Sony and Ericsson for discussions and talks on the interaction between the broadcasting and broadband industries across the globe. The two day conference covered key emerging trends such as personalization, connected screens and delivery trends.

At the conference attended by over 90 top-level delegates from 20 different countries, we presented on the topic of `Turning audience data into actionable insights: Driving business value out of fragmented data`.

The talk focused on the increasing challenges and the great opportunities the media companies have in deriving further value from their content as audiences shift to viewing their favourite shows over the internet.

Firstly, we spoke about how we are able to collect far more accurate information about what audiences are viewing and thinking about as we are now able to track non-sampled 100% audience data from multiple digital services. We expressed the importance of panel-based sources such as BARB being married to non-standardised sources such as social media.

We then moved to the topic of finding relevant trends against multiple benchmarks, as meaningful insights, both through human and machine learning processes. Lastly, we spoke on the necessity of cultural change and how we visualise data to make it relevant and easy to access / manage.

The EBU Broadthinking 2014 conference was a great opportunity to get feed-back on the changing landscape of media and on how our next generation big data insights services could help broadcasters cease these opportunities.

This year’s event was also a change to its traditional format where the main focus had been on broadcast technologies as for the first time there was greater focus on new media. At the event we had great discussions with RTL, BBC and several Asian broadcasters. It was a stimulating two days in the company of major broadcasters, service providers, manufacturers, research institutes and policymakers across the globe.
